Description: – The Catedral de la Almudena or Almudena Cathedral is located in the centre of Madrid, and abuts the Royal Palace. Construction began in 1879, in the Neo-Romanesque style, though all work on it stopped during the Spanish Civil War. Construction resumed only in 1950. On the nearby Calle Mayor which leads to the cathedral, you can see some of the remains of the medieval city walls and remains of the Moorish fortress. The Alumdena Cathedral was finally completed in 1993 when it was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. The interior could be seen on televisions across Spain during the much anticipated marriage ceremony between Prince Felipe of Asturias and Letizia Ortiz Roscasolano. Formerly a newscaster, she is now known as the Princess of Asturias. Today visitors can enjoy a combination of historical structures and modern artistry. There are free concerts at the cathedral which are also worth keeping an eye out for on Sundays.
